On September 7th, the annual MTV music awards were hosted. But over the last few years, I have been disappointed by the results. For example, in 2024, the song of summer went to Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” instead of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Expresso.” A result that was not only unexpected, but quite frankly, just upsetting. So, let’s take a look at the winners of the 2025 MTV awards:
Song of the Year: APT. vs. Ordinary
The winner of the song of the year for 2025 was the song “APT” by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars. Although the song is catchy, and fun to listen to, how did it win over the beautiful melody of “Ordinary”. Alex Warren’s recent success in the music department, rising to the top of charts in less than a year, is due to the powerful messages of his songs. The song “Ordinary” is no exception to this.
“Ordinary” is a powerful love song about how the love the couple shares is great. With beautiful rhymes, soft melodies, and a nice beat, combined with lyrics about love, and light, tasteful mentions to Heaven surely should beat out a song that half the world didn’t even understand the meaning of, until an interview.
Song of the Summer: Just Keep Watching vs. Manchild
The song of the summer, “Just Keep Watching”, a decent song from the movie F1. Considering the fact I had never even heard of this song before researching this article, makes me wonder how it won song of the summer. Song of the summer typically goes to the song blasting at every barbecue, car radio, and beach day of summer vacation. As a person who enjoys listening to 93.3 FM, I’m surprised I had never heard of the song’s name before.
Now, my description of the song of the summer may not match Manchild, considering it came out in August, towards the end of the summer. But after its release, it quickly rose the charts, blasting at every barbecue, car radio, and beach day of the rest of summer vacation. A fun, dancey song. That’s the song of the summer to me at least.
Best Group: BLACKPINK vs. Coldplay
I’m not a big fan of K-Pop, it’s not really my thing. But media wise, I feel as though BLACKPINK hasn’t shown up as much as they used. Coldplay however, had a very successful year.
Coldplay played a tour called the “Music of Spheres” which has been going on since 2022. Recently coming to a conclusion, the tour blew up on social media after a recent scandal at one of their concerts, with a certain CEO getting caught in an affair. Other than that though, raving reviews of the tour spread across the media. Unfortunately, most of them got lost in the scandal posts, people loved the beauty of the lights, and the lovely music of Coldplay. This tour reignited a few old Coldplay fans, reminding the media why Coldplay was so successful in the past.
Overall, I think the MTV music awards needs work. And a new voting system, because over the last few years, it hasn’t been pretty.
