Galentine’s Day: The Celebration of (Platonic) Love

February 14th is universally known as the day to celebrate love with a partner or significant other. However, it’s becoming more and more evident that you don’t need to be in a relationship to celebrate. Let me introduce to you my all time favorite holiday tradition: Galentines!

No boyfriend? No problem! Romantic love is not the only kind that should be recognized; celebration of the love of friendship, especially in female friend groups, has proven to be an extremely popular tradition. Regardless of your relationship status, Galentines is just a fun excuse to dress up and celebrate with your friends.

Popular Galentines Activities

Brunch:

A fun, classy idea is going out to brunch, either at a cafe or at home. Usually friend groups decide to dress up in pink and red, and take pictures together for instagram. There are many options for brunch in the local area, including some of these aesthetic locations in Boston:

• The Courtyard Tea Room offered at the Boston Public Library, which offers a wide tea selection with small appetizers and cakes

• Silver Dove Tea located on Tremont Street, offering tea, small plates and desserts

• Cafe Bonjour located near downtown crossing, which offers classic brunch foods and many allergy friendly options

Board + Power Point Night:

Another fun option includes “board nights” where everyone brings a different board based on a theme. If you’re looking for creative ideas, look on pinterest! Another fun and interactive activity is to have a Power Point night, which can be done with the board night or separately. Your friend group can pick a theme, and everyone creates their own presentation, usually finding a way to incorporate the friend group into the presentation; these are always entertaining. Here’s some interesting ideas:

• Hot takes (your opinion on controversialcontroversal topics)

• Red or green flags

• How each friend would end up in jail

• Casting your friends as Hunger Games characters

• Who would survive the longest in a horror movie

• Your friends as Disney characters

• What celebrity each friend would be

These never fail to make me laugh, so I would definitely recommend you put this on the itinerary for your next group hang out.

Cake Decorating or Spa Night

Decorating valentines themed cakes or desserts is always a great idea, because you can be as creative as you want, and make it unique to your friend group. Similarly, spa nights are something everyone can agree on; you and your friends can put together a night of face masks and movies, and relax.
