Hot take!!! Home Alone 2 is better than Home Alone 1

Although most people may not agree, the second Home Alone movie is definitely better than the first one.  Despite the fact that the first one is loved by all and is the highest grossing Christmas movie of all time, the second one tops it in so many ways.

Right off the bat, this movie is more wild in the fact that Kevin gets lost in New York, which is much scarier than his own house. The audience has to wonder how he is ever going to survive in this huge city when he has no money, no family, and no experience. The things he does to sustain himself may seem unrealistic at times but that just adds to the fun of the movie. It is enjoyable for both kids and adults because there is something unexpected around every corner and everyone is rooting for the already well-loved little boy character. We know he is smart based off of the first movie, but excited to see what ideas he will conjure up in the second one.

The second Home Alone has Tim Curry in it. That is all you need to know. That fact automatically makes this movie so much better than the original one. Tim Curry is a well-known, well-loved, fantastic actor who appears in It, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Clue, Annie, and many, many more. He delivers some of the best comedy in the two movies combined, despite the fact that the “wet bandits” and, of course, Kevin himself, are also quite funny. However, Tim Curry is just a phenomenal actor and adds character to the movie that is not present in the original. As he plays the butler at the hotel Kevin ends up staying at, he is slightly terrorized by Kevin and does everything in his power to find out what is going on with the kid since he has not seen his parents. This is such an important part of the movie as the stupidity of the butler is the reason Kevin is able to stay in the hotel for so long and not be cast out onto the streets.

This movie also includes two older, wiser figures. The first one has one, which is the neighbor with the salt, but the second one has E.F. Duncan from the toy store and the bird lady in the park. Both have wise words for Kevin and offer more than one lesson to the movie. These characters add more depth to the movie the first one has, and the way they aid Kevin on his journey is so unique. One teaches him about friendship and the other about caring for others, which are both important virtues in life.

Lastly, my favorite part of this movie is the traps Kevin sets for Harry and Marv. They are most definitely funnier than the ones in the first movie as Kevin had to step it up to truly trick the burglars. They fall through floors, get hit with bricks, slip, get shot with staples, and, ultimately, attacked by pigeons. And, to top it off, Kevin does all of this in a house that is not his and is being renovated. That is impressive.

Overall, Home Alone 2 is funnier, more insightful, and more interesting than Home Alone 1, and I highly suggest adding it to your annual watchlist.
