Imagine a sweet little kid dressed as an angel, knocking on your door and holding out their plastic jack-o’-lantern, saying “trick or treat!” You smile and drop a caramel or chocolate into their bucket, and their face lights up with joy.
Now, imagine a teenager doing the same thing.
Now… an adult.
Did your initial reaction shift from “aww, that’s adorable” to “huh, that’s kind of odd”?

Halloween is loved worldwide because anyone can take part in the festivities, whether it’s handing out candy, dressing up, or decorating your porch. But when it comes to trick-or-treating, is there really an age limit?

To find out what others think, I created a Google Form and sent it to my fellow juniors. Here’s what they said:

How old were you the last time you went trick-or-treating?
All who responded said there’s no set age limit, with 15 being the oldest age someone last went trick-or-treating.

If you stopped trick-or-treating, what made you stop?
The responses were evenly split between:

  • I felt “too old.”

  • My friends stopped going.

  • I started hanging out with friends or family instead.

  • I just wasn’t interested anymore.

What age do you think is most appropriate for trick-or-treating?

  • 40% said up to 12 years old.

  • 40% said up to 18 years old.

  • 20% said there’s no age limit as long as you’re respectful.

How do you feel when older teens go trick-or-treating?

  • 60% said it’s totally fine—Halloween is for everyone.

  • 40% said it depends on the person’s costume and attitude.

Open response: What age do you think people should stop trick-or-treating?
Here are a few standout answers:

  • “I probably would’ve stopped sooner, but my friends and I wanted to go one last time.”

  • “As you get older, it’s so fun to give out candy! I think any age is fine, but probably around 14–15.”

  • “13–14.”

  • “15.”

  • “Never!”

As you can see, opinions vary a lot. Some people are fine with anyone trick-or-treating, while others prefer to pass the candy bowl once they hit high school.

In the end, it really comes down to you. As long as you’re respectful, have a good attitude, and maybe wear a costume that shows some effort, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy Halloween however you like, whether that’s trick-or-treating, handing out candy, or just spending time with friends.
