Mount Does Snow Days the Right Way

At other schools, I honestly feel terrible when what should be a “snow day” is replaced with a “virtual learning day.” In my opinion, that takes away all the nostalgia, joy, and excitement that a good old-fashioned snow day is supposed to bring. When we were younger, there was no better feeling than standing inches away from the TV, watching the news, scanning the bottom of the screen as school names slid by, and finally seeing your school’s name followed by the words “closed due to snow.” The euphoric feeling was unmatched.

That announcement meant immediately running to the mudroom, pulling on bulky snow pants and warm, clunky boots, and rushing outside to enjoy the white, marshmallow-like fluff. What would have been a day spent inside a classroom, sitting at a desk for six hours and staring out the window as ice clung to the window frames, suddenly became a day full of memories, fun, and relaxation. A snow day was an excuse to do nothing except enjoy being a kid.

Now that we’re older, and many of us are past our snowman-building and sledding days, I find myself appreciating snow days even more. A snow day now means I don’t have to worry about stressing over a test, rushing to practice, being somewhere on time, or running late. Instead, I get the coziness of my home and a beautifully painted picture outside my window that only gets better as the day goes on.

For this, I’m incredibly grateful that Mount appreciates and acknowledges the true joy of a snow day. Prioritizing students’ well-being and preserving that nostalgic feeling matters. In a world where technology is constantly taking over, snow days are one thing the internet should never be allowed to control!
